Ron and Ester Shultz, who lived in Pennsylvania at the time, began designing Bakelite jewelry pieces in the mid-1980s. The pair is known for using vintage Bakelite, also known as Catalin, and reworking it into new creations. Shultz pieces have been crafted from a variety of old Bakelite items, including bangle bracelets, original unused rods of material, broken radios, and other objects.

To create the couple’s unique designs, the Bakelite was cut, sanded to smooth rough edges, and polished. “From witty pins of every possible subject to confetti polka dotted and checkerboard patterned bangles, and more,” Shultz jewelry takes Bakelite to a whole new realm, according to author Karima Parry in her book Shultz Bakelite Jewelry.

The work of the Shultz design duo is highly regarded among collectors of newer plastic jewelry. Shultz jewelry includes pieces with colorful dots added to original Bakelite bracelets as well as completely unique designs conceived in the Shultz workshop. Some closely resemble older Bakelite jewelry but are marked to distinguish them from vintage pieces. While most pieces were produced during the 1990s, Shultz jewelry was made through the early 2000s on a limited basis.
